asian game shows RULE!!
this is kinda a long video, but just watching a few minutes of it is worth it. sara and i discovered this show on G4 late one night. all we could think was "AWESOME!!" i also like watching filipino game shows when i am home with the 'rents. they are mostly singing or dancing talent shows for money. way too much fun. ninja warrior is like the asian version of american gladiator from the 90s on serious CRACK. incredible.

radio classics....sirius channel 118

i've become slightly addicted to old radio shows that they replay on sirius satellite radio (thanks to sara). now on long trips and even just driving around, i listen to shows like burns & allen, sherlock holmes, & yours truly johnny dollar. the other day, i heard an episode of superman featuring batman and robin.

believe it or not, i overheard an older woman talking about how children these days don't develop their imaginations because shows like this don't exist anymore. i ALMOST busted into her conversation and said...YES, they DO!!! but i held back.

i am definitely going to start reading more about sherlock holmes. it's funny to hear these older shows on modern equipment, but whatever it takes, right? there is talk of a merger of sirius and xm satellite radio.
as long as there is a radio classics station, i will remain a loyal subscriber.

all about luck

short story. i had a woman walk up to me and whisper, "good thing you work for brookstone, so you can meet a MAN." i turned to her and said, "i KNOW, right?!"
in an unrelated situation, i had someone interview for an assistant manager position that was vacant. she was recently divorced and thought brookstone would be the perfect place to meet men. then, she proceeds to ask, "is the store manager single?" my response, "he's MARRIED." of course, she had to be filipino. and all i could say to myself was, "YIKES!!!" obviously, she did not get the job.

a new chapter

after almost five years, i'm taking my leave of brookstone. i'm starting a new chapter of my life and going to work at borders bookstores. i'll be a sales manager for them at a store pretty close to me. i'm excited about the change and for all the support my friends and family have given me. for all those who know me, this store is a perfect fit. hope to see you there soon. this is my goodbye to the igallop.

adventure tours

i met a woman the other day that was planning on taking a trip for the first time in her life. she had raised two kids and they were now in college. she told me about the trip for which she was buying her travel supplies. i had never really heard of these, but she was taking an adventure tour of mexico. perhaps since it would involve a lot of "physical" activity like kayaking, hiking, and biking, it would not have appealed to me in the travel guide. but the way she talked about it made it seem pretty appealing. she was in job transition and decided to take some time out for herself. she looked so excited and she was taking this trip all on her own, not knowing anyone. that, by itself, was impressive. she appeared to have come a long way already. she also asked for a discount on the item she was buying so she could offer a testimony when she got back...that took real guts. maybe one day i would brave a trip that would require this much exertion...you all can stop laughing now. here's a link to a site i found about these...mexican adventures.

changing the view....
this is an old clip of the show, but i'm addicted to the view's hot topics. i don't know what to say, but i love watching rosie and joy behar compete to get their lines in. i like that rosie stirs it up and isn't afraid to say whatever the heck she wants. i tivo it everyday to watch the first part of the show. it's a problem. i hate elisabeth hasselback....with a passion. i liked her on survivor and i think she should have stayed on the island.

dance with me...

2nd story: noel
due to shows like dancing with the stars, the popularity of ballroom dancing has blossomed. incredibly enough, i actually met someone who professionally competed with his wife. his name was noel. he and his wife, victoria, who was russian, compete in the latin ballroom dancing competitions around the country. last i had heard from him (a regular customer), he and his wife were planning to dance on a cruise ship for 14 months.
they started this as a hobby and as something they could do as a couple. it ended up becoming a full-time profession. they both love it and i am amazed by it. i love dancing, even though i can't do it. i was impressed by his openness and his love for dance. maybe one day, i'll see them on dancing with the stars.

never a fan but, WHAT?!?

there is nothing i can say. sinead o'connor i understand. but this, there is no good explanation. if she just escaped from prison where they forced her to shave her head, then it may be understandable. not the case...she did it herself. this is her reaction to breaking up with k-fed?! natalie portman did it MUCH better in V for Vendetta.

buy this album
i know that john mayer is annoying to some, but i am not one of them. his last album continuum is amazing. sara gets annoyed by watching him sing....the way his mouth moves. :) however, i love him. i don't understand the choices he's made in his personal life. i loathe jessica simpson. i just hope she doesn't taint his musicianship. if he starts singing AND dancing "shakira" style, i will insist upon a break-up.

Feels like the first time...
i've had a blog on Myspace for a little while now, but not all of my friends have access to Myspace. thus, Just Five Minutes was born. what does that mean? well, because of what i do for a living, i have encounters with people that can last from a mere five minutes to hours long. and what i have discovered is that it only takes five minutes (if not, less) to make a connection with someone. i want to use this blog to stay in touch with folks and to post my opinions on things. however, i also want it to be a journal for all of the five minute interactions that i have with people everyday. some of these interactions are funny, aggrevating, and even touching. i'm amazed at what people will share with complete strangers, just because they need someone to talk to. i will never use first and last names to talk about someone and i may even make up a name to protect the innocent. i just think that people are incredible and i don't want to forget these stories.
1st story: oscar
he is retired security for the smithsonian. he now works security for the IRS...sounds fun, huh? this man has met edward james olmos, coretta scott king and chelsea clinton while working security. i was trying to sell him an air purifier and we ended up on the topic of good restaurants in the area. he told me about a restaurant called lauriol plaza in dupont circle (shown above). it apparently has been there forever and seats 400 people. every night, there is a wait. he even gave me their card. the minute i get the chance...i am there. in retail, you encounter hundreds upon hundreds of people in a day. i am glad that i get to learn a little something from the occasional few.
i hope you enjoy my blog. if not, stop reading it immediately or make a comment. i can take it.
